When parents think about mental health support for children and teens, nutrition is not always the first thing that comes to mind.
Yet growing research continues to show that physical health and emotional well-being are deeply connected. One key nutrient receiving increased attention is vitamin D – often called the “sunshine vitamin” – and its role in supporting mood, energy, and brain development in young people.
Vitamin D plays an important role in brain function and development. It supports neurotransmitters involved in mood regulation and helps reduce inflammation in the body – both of which are connected to emotional health. Signs of low vitamin D may include increased symptoms of depression, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating, particularly in adolescents whose brains are still developing.
“Vitamin D supports brain development and may play a role in protecting teen mental health,” said Veronica Horton, LMFT, Program Director for ROWI Thousand Oaks. “Getting enough vitamin D can help teens feel more energized, positive, and ready to take on the day. A little sunshine vitamin can go a long way in boosting teen mood and mental well-being.”
For many families, especially those with teens spending long hours indoors on screens or managing heavy academic demands, vitamin D levels can quietly drop without anyone realizing it.
Sunlight is one of the most natural sources of vitamin D, but lifestyle factors, seasonal changes, and sunscreen use can limit how much the body produces. While vitamin D is also found in certain foods and supplements, it’s important for parents to consult with a pediatrician before making changes, especially if mood changes, anxiety, or withdrawal are already present.
The ROWI EDGE Program
At ROWI Teen & Parent Wellness Centers, we take a whole-child approach to mental health – recognizing that emotional well-being doesn’t exist in isolation. That philosophy is reflected in the ROWI EDGE program, which supports teens through a comprehensive lens that includes emotional regulation, physical wellness, family dynamics, and daily habits that influence mental health. Nutrition, sleep, movement, and routines all matter – and the connection between vitamin D and mood is one piece of that larger picture.
The ROWI EDGE program helps teens understand how small, consistent changes can strengthen resilience and emotional balance over time. While vitamin D alone is not a treatment for mental health challenges, it can support the foundation that allows therapeutic work to be more effective. When teens feel physically supported, they are often better able to engage in therapy, build coping skills, and reconnect with confidence.
If you’ve noticed changes in your child’s mood, motivation, or energy, it may be a sign that something deeper is going on. At ROWI, we help families look at the full picture – mind and body – so teens can regain balance, strength, and a sense of forward momentum.
