Start School Stronger

ROWI’s newest program helps your child build confidence, resilience, and readiness for the new school year.

As summer winds down, many families begin preparing for a new school year. While shopping for supplies and organizing schedules are important, one of the most valuable ways parents can support their children is by helping them prepare emotionally, socially, and mentally for the transition back to school.

For children and teens ages 8-17, returning to school can bring excitement, but it can also create stress, anxiety, and uncertainty. New teachers, changing routines, academic expectations, social pressures, and increased responsibilities can feel overwhelming – especially for children who have struggled with school-related anxiety, confidence, executive functioning, or emotional regulation in the past.

That’s why ROWI Teen & Parent Wellness Centers created Start School Stronger, a focused back-to-school readiness program designed to help children and teens build the skills they need to succeed before the first day of school arrives.

Why Back-to-School Preparation Matters

Many parents wait until problems emerge before seeking support. However, the most effective approach is often proactive rather than reactive.

Just as athletes train before the season begins, children benefit from preparing mentally and emotionally before stepping back into the classroom. Establishing healthy habits and coping strategies ahead of time can reduce stress and create a smoother transition into the school year.

When children feel prepared, they are more likely to approach school with confidence, maintain healthy routines, manage challenges effectively, and develop stronger relationships with peers and teachers.

Common Challenges Children Face When Returning to School

Every child is different, but many students experience similar concerns as the school year approaches, including:

  • School-related anxiety
  • Difficulty adjusting to new routines
  • Social confidence concerns
  • Academic pressure and performance worries
  • Challenges with organization and time management
  • Executive functioning difficulties
  • Emotional regulation struggles
  • Attendance and school avoidance concerns

Without support, these challenges can impact a child’s academic performance, emotional well-being, and overall school experience.

Skills That Help Children Thrive

The goal of Start School Stronger is not simply to help children survive the school year – it’s to help them thrive.

Through structured skill-building and personalized support, participants learn how to:

  • Establish healthy daily routines
  • Reduce school-related anxiety
  • Improve emotional regulation
  • Strengthen social confidence
  • Develop executive functioning skills
  • Prepare for academic expectations
  • Build resilience and coping strategies
  • Create a successful transition plan for the school year

These foundational skills help children navigate challenges more effectively and increase their confidence both inside and outside the classroom.

Benefits for Children and Teens

When children develop emotional and practical readiness skills before school starts, they often experience:

  • Greater self-confidence
  • Improved coping abilities
  • Better emotional regulation
  • Stronger social connections
  • Increased readiness for academic success
  • Healthier routines and structure
  • Greater resilience when facing challenges

It’s never too early to get ready for the new school year.
